The Christian Art Studio at Ealing Abbey has announced a pilot diploma course in iconographic technique, starting in January 2024. The dates will be:

Term 1

5 January – 4 May

(17 weeks)

Half term break:

29  and 30 March

Term 2

6 September – 21 December

(15 weeks)

Half term break:

18 and 19 October

This is hands-on weekly learning that is studio-based and student-focussed. It will use a well-established method that builds foundational core skills, instils the principles and practice of iconography, immerses the student in Christian imagery past and present, and builds critical analysis and discernment. As with the learning of any skill, students will be expected to spend some time practicing.

The aim is to create sacred art that is well executed and technically sound; and engages the heart and mind of the the viewer to draw them into the mysteries of Holy Scripture.

If successful the pilot will be year 1 of a 4 year diploma programme affiliated to the Brussels Academy of Icon painting and using the syllabus formed, tried and tested over 20 year by Russian iconographer and art historian Irina Gorbounova-Lomax http://mmekourdukova.livejournal.com

The course will be taught by me, Amanda de Pulford, whose experience and motivation you can explore on this website.

The teaching will take place in the Christian Art Studio at Ealing Abbey, under the umbrella of the Benedictine Institute for Arts and Liturgical Studies.https://ealingmonks.org.uk/the-benedictine-institute/.

Students will benefit from the spiritual nourishment available and are encouraged to take up the opportunities on offer to deepen their prayer lives and their understanding of the liturgy.

The course is currently full, but enquiries are welcome. Email: amandadepulford@gmail.com
